Stages of Gross Motor Skill Development

Gross motor skills require large muscle groups or whole-body movement. Examples include crawling, walking, running and jumping. As you click on each image below, you’ll see skills kids can typically perform at that age. You’ll also see behaviors highlighted in red. 1-3 Months

Baby can:

• Raise head when lying on tummy

• Bring hands together

• Kick legs alternately

Your baby looks to only one side

3-5 Months

Baby can:

• Lift head and chest fully when lying on tummy

• Play while on tummy

Your baby does not lift head up when on his tummy

5-8 Months

Baby can:

• Roll from tummy to back and back to tummy

• Sit without support for play

Your baby does not roll or sits with a rounded back

9-10 Months

Baby can:

• Move into and out of sitting without help

• Crawl on hands and knees for mobility

• Pull up to standing at furniture

Your baby scoots on his bottom or crawls on one knee and one foot

10-12 Months

Baby can:

• Push a toy to walk

• Walk along furniture

• Stand alone for brief periods

Your baby does not put weight through his legs

12-18 Months

Baby can:

• Take steps independently

• Get up from the floor without help

Your baby does not walk or walks on tiptoes

2-4 Years

Toddler can:

• Pedal a tricycle

• Run

• Climb stairs

• Jump

Your toddler trips and falls frequently

5+ Years

Child can:

• Skip

• Hop on 1 foot

• Balance on 1 foot

• Ride a bike with training wheels

• Catch a ball

• Throw a ball at a target

Your child struggles to keep up with his peers on the playground
