Complications that happen during potty training can result from a condition called pelvic floor dysfunction. Pelvic floor dysfunction can occur in anyone. But in children, it can affect quality of life and self-esteem.

Biofeedback for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Our clinic is one of only a few in the area to offer biofeedback for pelvic floor dysfunction in kids. Our clinicians take time to educate you on this unique and effective technique.   • Urinary incontinence (loss of urine)
  • Urinary urgency (constant/strong need to urinate)
  • Urinary frequency (urinating over 8 times in a 24-hour period)
  • Urinary retention (not fully emptying bladder)
  • Urinary pain
  • Bedwetting
  • Fecal urgency (constant/strong need to defecate)
  • Fecal frequency
  • Fecal retention (not fully emptying bowels)
  • Bowel incontinence (defecation leakage)

How does biofeedback work?

We place a sticker on your child’s skin in the pelvic region. That sticker connects to a biofeedback monitor with a screen. Next, we ask your child to contract, relax and bulge their pelvic floor.  The biofeedback screen will give them immediate feedback as to whether they have activated the correct muscles. This immediate feedback helps your child regain control of his or her pelvic floor.

Biofeedback is also helpful for constipation issues. It teaches your child how to relax and lengthen the pelvic floor to allow stool to pass easily. Kids actually enjoy receiving immediate feedback on the biofeedback screen as it confirms that they are activating the right muscles.
